Major retail chains expand with new stores across Cyprus

Retail sector growth is driving major chains to open new stores across Cyprus, with METRO, STEPHANIS and JUMBO all announcing expansion plans.

METRO opened its seventh store in Cyprus this month in Agia Fyla, Limassol. The group now operates three stores in Nicosia (Strovolos, Aglandjia, Platy), one in Larnaca, one in Paralimni and two in Limassol (Mouttagiaka and Agia Fyla).

The new 2,500 square metre store spans two levels and features eight tills and three self-service checkouts.

Electronics retailer STEPHANIS announced plans for a new flagship store in Larnaca on Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue, near the port roundabout. The building will feature 2,500 square metres of showroom space across two floors, plus 1,000 square metres of warehouse space on a third floor, bringing total space to 3,500 square metres.

Construction has started on what will become STEPHANIS’s largest store when it opens in 2027, according to the group. The retailer currently operates eight stores: two in Nicosia, two in Limassol, and one each in Larnaca, Paralimni and Paphos, plus a central warehouse in the Idaliou industrial area.

JUMBO previously announced plans to open two new stores in Cyprus, though locations have not been disclosed. The group currently operates six stores: two in Nicosia, two in Limassol, one in Larnaca and one in Paphos.

The expansion comes as Cyprus’s retail sector shows strong performance. The Statistical Service reported that retail turnover value rose 6.3% in September 2025 compared with the same month last year, whilst retail sales volume increased 9%.

Food, drink and tobacco specialist stores recorded the largest monthly sales volume increase at 19.2%, followed by clothing and footwear at 15.8% and household equipment, including electrical appliances, at 10.4%. Supermarket sales volume rose 8.7%.
