Police are investigating an apparent act of arson after a fire was deliberately set on tyres placed in the middle of a road in the Mesa Geitonia area of Limassol late on Friday night.
The incident is immediately suspected to be connected to the informal significance of 13 December (ACAB day), a date that has in recent years been associated with episodes of vandalism, arson, and confrontations with police, primarily by groups of minors.
The fire was reported shortly before midnight in front of a church, when young individuals allegedly set fire to tyres they had placed on the road surface around 23:40, according to witness reports.
The resulting blaze produced thick smoke, creating hazardous conditions for traffic and forcing vehicles to slow down and navigate carefully around the burning objects.
Members of the Police and the Fire Service were dispatched to the scene, where they extinguished the fire and initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
