Life prisoner, 63, dies in Nicosia Central Prisons

A 63-year-old life prisoner was found dead in his cell at the Central Prisons on Friday afternoon, prompting an immediate investigation by the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Prison staff discovered the inmate unresponsive at approximately 15:55, and despite the immediate intervention of on-site medical services and subsequent transfer to the Nicosia General Hospital A&E, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

While preliminary indications suggest the death was due to a cardiac arrest, authorities have ordered a post-mortem examination, scheduled for late Friday evening, to determine the exact cause of death and rule out foul play.

The Prisons Department confirmed that the inmate’s family was notified immediately and that the institution is “fully cooperating” with investigating officers.

This incident marks the second death in custody in less than two months, following the December 2025 death of a 23-year-old foreign national in similar circumstances.
