Legendary Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci and the iconic Cypriot lace-maker Marikkou of Lefkara are set to be brought back to life as holographic AI avatars to guide visitors through rural Larnaca.
The Larnaca and Famagusta District Development Agency (ANETEL) has signed a contract with PwC Cyprus to develop the interactive digital characters. The project, part of the EU-funded REVIVE – Interreg Euro-MED programme, will see the duo stationed at the Environmental Information Centre in Skarinou.
Using advanced artificial intelligence and holographic imaging, the avatars will provide information on local history, traditional arts, and regional landmarks. Visitors will be able to interact with the digital guides in real-time via a high-definition 86-inch 4K touchscreen.
ANETEL stated that the project “concerns the development of an interactive digital AI avatar of Marikkou of Lefkara, inspired by the rich tradition of Lefkara lace, combined with the iconic figure of Leonardo da Vinci.”
The initiative aims to offer an “immersive tourist and educational experience,” blending global cultural heritage with local tradition to promote the region’s identity.
The wider REVIVE project is funded by Interreg Euro-MED and operates with a total budget of €2.38 million.
