Lawyer arrested in occupied north was reportedly representing multiple Greek Cypriot clients

A Turkish Cypriot lawyer who is representing five Greek Cypriots illegally held in the occupied north on trespassing a military zone charges was arrested yesterday.

Murat Metin Haki’s arrest appears to be linked to tensions surrounding procedures in the Republic of Cyprus against individuals accused of large-scale appropriation of Greek Cypriot properties.

According to sources, Haki had been representing a couple seeking compensation for loss of use—not sale—of property they hold in occupied Trikomo. The couple had submitted an application to the so-called “immovable property commission” of the breakaway entity prior to their arrest alongside three other individuals.

Haki’s involvement did not extend to defending the five Greek Cypriots in their current case. The five individuals face charges from occupation authorities including unauthorised entry to private property and possession of personal data.

Sources report that Haki maintains close collaboration with law firms based in the Republic of Cyprus.

The so-called “judicial authorities” in the occupied areas have scheduled the next hearing for the five Greek Cypriot refugees on 5 September 2025, with three prosecution witnesses expected to testify.
