Larnaca bus workers suspend strike for Labour Ministry talks

Striking workers at Larnaca Public Transport Services and Operations Ltd (LPT) have temporarily suspended today’s mobilisation following a Labour Ministry invitation for dialogue at the Labour Relations Department.

The decision was taken as a gesture of goodwill after employee representatives met with the Labour Relations Director. The meeting’s outcome will be put to a General Assembly of workers at 17:00 at the SEK Larnaca building, where final decisions will be made.

Strike over contract violations

The indefinite strike, which began last week, saw drivers denouncing flagrant violation of their collective agreement by the employer company. The complaint was confirmed by the Labour Relations Department, which ruled that the labour side has the right to take measures under the Industrial Relations Code.

Trade unions SEGDAMELIN-PEO, OMEPEGE-SEK and DEE EMPORIKON DEOK called on the company to respect the collective agreement, implement what was agreed and honour its signature.

They also asked the Labour Ministry to ensure implementation of the collective agreement, emphasising that LPT operates as a public passenger transport provider.

Planned escalation suspended

At yesterday’s General Assembly, strikers had decided to escalate measures with a protest at the company’s offices in Solomou Square in Nicosia and a march to the Labour Ministry.

The mobilisation was scheduled to begin today at 08:00 from Larnaca station before being temporarily suspended.

Workers seek understanding from the travelling public, expressing apologies for the inconvenience, and call for support of their struggle for labour rights and protection of collective agreements.
