Larnaca bus drivers reject Labour Ministry proposal as strike enters ninth day

Bus drivers for Larnaca Public Transport have rejected a Labour Ministry proposal following a marathon general assembly on Tuesday evening, extending their strike to a ninth day over alleged contract violations.

The drivers voted by majority to reject the proposal presented earlier Tuesday after meetings at the Labour Ministry. Workers accuse the company of violating their collective agreement regarding working hours.

According to trade unions, the company is breaching the agreed 38-hour working week, which should limit daily shifts to 7 hours and 36 minutes.

Rejected proposal details

The proposal would have compensated all workers for any time worked beyond 7 hours and 36 minutes daily, with maximum working time not exceeding 9 hours and break periods limited to 60 minutes.

The complete suspension of the company’s bus services is causing significant disruption to passengers during peak tourist season. Many visitors rely heavily on buses along Dhekelia Road to reach the city centre.

The ongoing strike affects transport links at a time when Larnaca is packed with tourists dependent on public transport services.
