Larnaca bus drivers end 11-day strike after labour ministry clarifications

Larnaca Public Transport bus drivers have decided to end their indefinite strike and return to work tomorrow, bringing relief to residents and visitors who have been without bus services for eleven days.

The decision followed yesterday’s meeting with Labour Minister Yiannis Panayiotou, who provided clarifications on the mediation proposal submitted by his ministry’s relevant department. Workers were convinced by the explanations and decided to end the strike.

Strike centred on collective agreement violations

Workers went on strike alleging the company violated their collective agreement. According to trade unions, the company breached working hours stipulating 38 hours weekly and consequently 7 hours and 36 minutes daily work.

The Labour Ministry’s proposal provided that any employment time beyond 7 hours and 36 minutes daily would be compensated for all workers, the work framework would not exceed 9 hours, whilst break time would not exceed 60 minutes.

The strike resolution ends significant disruption to public transport services in the Larnaca district, where residents and tourists had been left without bus connections for nearly two weeks.

Bus services are expected to resume normal operations from tomorrow morning following the workers’ return to duty.
