Justice minister to announce Central Prison measures to tackle crime

Justice Minister Costas Fytiris said he will soon announce measures for the Central Prisons, following multiple visits to assess conditions at the facility.

“Soon I will be in a position to announce measures for the Central Prisons that will help improve the correctional facility,” Fytiris told journalists after visiting the Limassol Police Directorate on Monday.

The minister has visited the prisons three times and will make another visit on Wednesday. He said the purpose is to see what is really happening in the field to find the necessary solutions.

Asked about the mobile phone jamming system, Fytiris said the ministry would look at everything as it goes. “Whatever problems exist, we will solve them, rest assured,” he said.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the level of police directorates, noting their work is very difficult but that ordinary officers and senior ranks will cope with the spirit they have.

“I will do what I can to promote requests concerning technology and solving issues, always in cooperation with the Chief, so the Police can fulfil their mission which is society’s security,” he said. “This is the goal, and we are all tools in the service of society.”

Asked whether increased crime in Limassol worries him, Fytiris said authorities would do everything possible for people to walk safely at any time of day. “This is the goal and we will do whatever is necessary to achieve it,” he said.

He described the police structure as a pyramid with ordinary officers as the base supporting the entire organisation up to the chief and minister. The minister conveyed congratulations on recent investigations.

Under a programme issued by Police Headquarters, checks and investigations have multiplied recently, he said. “We will continue in this framework so that crime and illegal actions are reduced to a minimum.”
