Interview with Valerio Zamboni: From Pilot to Ultracyclist

Valerio Zamboni is a man of many talents. He is not only an accomplished pilot and founder of a business aircraft sales and acquisition company, but also a six-time winner of the World Ultra-Cycling Association World Cup, Ultramarathon World Champion, and record holder in the Race Across America. We sat down with Valerio to learn more about his journey from pilot to ultracyclist.

CT: Let’s start from the beginning. Can you tell us a bit about your early life?

VZ: Sure, I was born to Italian parents from Emilia Romagna, Norina Balestri and Luciano Zamboni. I spent my early years of childhood studying in Bologna until the Liceo Linguistico internazionale. I always had a passion for flying and became a Glider Pilot at a young age. I later moved to Milan for my first pilot job when I was 23 years old.

CT: What drew you to aviation?

VZ: Aviation has always fascinated me. As a child, I used to love watching airplanes take off and land. When I was old enough, I joined the local Flying Club to pursue my dream of becoming a commercial pilot.

CT: When did your interest in cycling begin?

VZ: Cycling came relatively late in life for me. It was after an accident while mountain climbing that left me unable to participate in any aerobic sports. After undergoing a hip replacement and extensive physical and mental training, I picked up cycling as a way to stay active. What was initially a hobby quickly became a passion, and I started participating in races.

CT: You have achieved numerous world titles and records in ultracycling. What motivates you to keep pushing yourself?

VZ: I love the challenge of pushing my limits and seeing what I am capable of. Ultracycling requires both physical and mental strength, and I enjoy the satisfaction of achieving my goals. Plus, the cycling community is incredibly supportive and inspiring, which motivates me to keep going.

CT: What has been your proudest moment in your cycling career so far?

VZ: Winning the Ultramarathon World Championship at the age of 57 was a huge achievement for me. It was a moment that proved that age is just a number, and that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.

CT: Can you tell us a bit about your personal life?

VZ: I live in Monaco with my wife Alessandra Soncini. We got married in March 2008. At that time my wife was working as a model agent for the Fashion Model agency in Milan. Today she supports me in my sports career, and she has always supported me in all my ideas. She is my inspiration and all my achievements are largely due to the fact that she is always by my side.

Valerio Zamboni’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication. From a young glider pilot to an accomplished ultracyclist and a world champion, Valerio has shown that anything is possible with hard work and determination. It’s inspiring to see someone excel in multiple fields and push themselves to achieve their goals.
