The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) has announced that the ‘Imagine’ anti-racism and peace education programme will resume for the 2025–2026 school year, following a period of uncertainty over its continuation.
According to AHDR, the relevant circular has now been published, allowing activities with students to move forward for the new academic year.
The programme, launched in 2017 under the auspices of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Education, aims to strengthen contact between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot students and teachers through a broader understanding of a culture of peace and non-violence. It is implemented by AHDR and the Home for Cooperation and funded by the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Since its launch, more than 8,200 students and around 2,500 educators have taken part in its activities. The initiative has also received international recognition, including a Global Education Network Europe (GENE) award for its contribution to peace education.
At the start of the current school year, concerns had been raised over the programme’s future after no official circular was issued to schools, effectively preventing participation during school hours. Political reactions followed, with calls for clarity on whether the programme would continue and for a timetable for its resumption. AHDR at the time said it remained ready to continue implementation once participation was reaffirmed.
For the upcoming school year, applications are being accepted from groups of students at lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools and technical schools. Interested teachers can complete the application form sent to schools and, following approval from the school management, submit it to the designated email address provided in the circular.
