A post-mortem examination of a man whose body was discovered at a beach in Avdimou has failed to provide immediate answers regarding the cause of death, leaving investigators to await the results of specialised laboratory testing.
The examination, which concluded on Thursday afternoon, was conducted by an international forensic pathologist specifically brought in to collaborate with the British Bases authorities, who maintain jurisdiction over the area where the remains were found.
While the formal identification process is still ongoing, investigative leads increasingly suggest that the deceased is Vladislav Baumgertner, a 56-year-old Russian businessman who has been missing since 7 January.
Despite the strong circumstantial evidence linking the discovery to the missing person case, authorities have stressed that a definitive identification will only be confirmed once DNA profiling is completed. Forensic samples were also collected for toxicological and histopathological analysis during the procedure to determine if foul play or underlying health issues contributed to the fatality.
The discovery was made at noon on Wednesday by a member of the public who stumbled upon the remains on the Avdimou shoreline, immediately triggering a high-level security alert across the Sovereign Base Areas.
Initial police assessments at the scene determined that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, a factor that has significantly complicated the identification process and necessitated the involvement of the British Bases’ specialised forensic units.
