Greens call for stray cat trapping regulations after disappearances case

The Movement of Ecologists-Citizens’ Cooperation (Greens) is calling for a regulatory framework governing the capture and mass sterilisation of stray cats by animal welfare organisations and private individuals, requiring that residents be notified in advance, and that sterilised animals be returned to their usual habitat.

The proposal comes as the party pushes back against recent reports suggesting a breakthrough in a case involving missing kittens, insisting the matter remains unsolved.

According to information available to the party, none of the missing kittens has been found at the location from which they disappeared. The Greens said any portrayal of the case as moving towards resolution did not reflect reality and that it remained open and serious.

Greens president Stavros Papadouris has written formally to the Chief of Police requesting a full and immediate investigation, an intensification of inquiries, and an update on steps taken by authorities to date.

The party called on authorities to continue their investigation without delay until the fate of the animals is established and responsibility assigned where appropriate.

The Greens said animal protection could not be reduced to a communications exercise and must be met with substantive action and accountability.
