Greek media reported that Greek F-16 fighter jets carried out interceptions of suspected drones near Lebanon before they entered Cyprus airspace.
According to reports citing Cypriot government sources, two Greek F-16s took off on an emergency basis from the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos and proceeded to intercept what were believed to be two drones.
The interceptions reportedly occurred before the objects entered Cyprus’ airspace.
Meanwhile, an Aegean Airlines flight bound for Larnaca was forced to return to Athens after it was not permitted to land at Larnaca airport for security reasons.
According to available information, the aircraft is heading back to Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”. Cyprus’ airspace remains open.
The most likely scenario, according to current information, is that the aircraft will refuel in Athens and the flight to Larnaca will be rescheduled if conditions allow.
