Greek Cypriot couple return home after five months’ detention in occupied north

A Greek Cypriot couple detained for five months in the occupied north have returned to government-controlled areas, completing the case of all five Greek Cypriots arrested on 19 July 2025.

Strovolos sports club “O Keravnos” announced the return of Andreas and Anna Kyprianou, expressing joy, relief and vindication after the end of their detention in the occupied areas.

The couple were held under what the club called unsubstantiated and fabricated charges until their final return to areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.

They were arrested alongside three other Greek Cypriots whilst visiting their legally owned property in the village of Galatia near Trikomo, carrying cadastral maps and title deeds proving ownership.

The group – all over 60 – were accused of espionage and violating a forbidden military zone after allegedly entering a tourist resort without permission. Turkish Cypriot “authorities” found maps, property deeds and construction firm information in their car.

The other three detained were Akis and Nicoletta Gregoriou, and Antonis Louka. Three of the five were released on bail in September but remained unable to return home, effectively held within the Turkish-controlled zone. All are now back with their families and returning to their daily lives.

Keravnos Strovolos thanked all who contributed to ending the case. The club gave special mention to Turkish Cypriot citizens who showed sensitivity and support to the detainees, proving that humanity and solidarity have no borders.

Despite the relief, the club said it remains deeply concerned about the illegal detention and inhumane treatment the compatriots suffered, noting the incident raises serious security and citizen protection issues.
