Greece and Cyprus have received invitations from Donald Trump to join a Peace Council that will oversee Gaza’s temporary governance, according to Greek media reports.
The two countries are among 25 founding members of the council, which includes all participants from the historic Sharm El-Sheikh ceremony—France, Canada, Gulf states and Turkey, euronews reported.
Their inclusion marks a boost to Greece and Cyprus’s international standing and their role in developments across the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.
The Turkish presidency announced earlier that Trump had written to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan inviting him to join the Peace Council.
The council forms part of the second phase of Trump’s Gaza peace plan, established under UN Security Council Resolution 2803. The body will provide international oversight of the transitional process and support stabilisation efforts aimed at fully implementing the agreement.
Two transitional bodies have been created to back the Peace Council’s work. The Executive Committee will handle the political and operational aspects of the Gaza agreement. A Palestinian national technocratic committee will run Gaza temporarily during the transition.
Former Bulgarian diplomat N. Mladenov has been appointed High Representative to coordinate the transitional bodies and the Peace Council.
