The cabinet on Wednesday approved special student transport fares for the period from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2027, setting monthly tickets at €5 with a €17 government subsidy and annual passes at €30 with €190 per student subsidisation.
Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades announced that children from large families and five-member households attending public secondary and technical education will be fully exempted from fare payments starting 1 September 2025.
The special student fare system will also include minors under the care and guardianship of Social Welfare Services, even if they do not attend school. Zero-value tickets will be issued for disadvantaged students and children of disability allowance beneficiaries, with contractors receiving corresponding compensation.
Large families receive full exemption from transport fees
“The regulation aims to facilitate students and improve the quality of public transport, whilst also expected to contribute to reducing traffic congestion,” Vafeadis stated.
The minister confirmed that the “door-to-door” programme for primary school children continues as last year, with efforts to expand routes where community needs and driver availability permit. “The government’s intention is to serve as widely as possible,” he added.
Annual passes set at €30 with €190 government subsidy
The door-to-door service primarily covers rural areas but operates in urban centres on a limited scale due to driver shortages, Vafeadis noted.
