Government launches solar water heating grant scheme offering up to €900 per household

The Cabinet has approved a new €1 million grant scheme providing financial incentives for households to install or replace solar water heating systems.

The scheme aims to enhance energy efficiency in residential properties across Cyprus. Applications will be processed electronically until 20 December 2025 or until 2,000 applications are received, whichever occurs first.

Grant amounts vary by recipient category, with general households receiving €500 per residence, increasing to €900 for properties in mountainous and disadvantaged areas. Vulnerable households qualify for the maximum €900 grant regardless of location.

The scheme covers complete solar system installations or replacements, including solar panels and hot water cylinders, using pre-approved equipment meeting minimum energy requirements. Installations must be conducted by certified professionals included in the Participating Installers Register to ensure quality standards.

Eligibility is restricted to natural persons investing in legal, existing and inhabited residences. Commercial activities are excluded from the programme, eliminating state aid considerations. Partial installations covering only cylinders or solar panels alone are not eligible for funding.

Technical requirements and implementation:

  • Equipment must appear on the Eligible Equipment Catalogue
  • Professional installation by registered contractors mandatory
  • Complete system replacement or installation required
  • Previous solar grant recipients within the last decade excluded

Replacing outdated water heaters with modern solar systems offers significant energy and financial savings whilst reducing pollution emissions.

The scheme particularly addresses the needs of residents in remote and disadvantaged regions through enhanced grant provisions.

Applications will be submitted electronically through the RES Fund website (www.ref.org.cy), where detailed information, equipment catalogues and certified installer lists will be published. The fund will announce the application opening date through official channels.

Prospective participants must verify their residence is legally existing and used as primary or permanent accommodation, confirm no previous solar grants received within the past decade, select certified installers from official registers, and ensure equipment meets technical specifications and catalogue requirements.
