Foreign ministry: Turkish plane flew over the buffer zone

The foreign ministry said on Thursday evening it was aware of an incident involving a Turkish plane flying over the buffer zone.

A ministry source told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the ministry has contacted the UN peacekeeping force about the issue.

The location of the Turkish plane’s fly-by was revealed by the community leader of Deneia.

Deneia is a village in the Nicosia district. It is one of only four villages located within the United Nations buffer zone.

Christakis Panayiotou, Deneia’s community leader, told CNA that the Turkish plane flew over the buffer zone for about an hour.

More seriously, he added, the plane circled the village five to six times before finally heading north.

It was the first time such an incident occurred, he said, adding that residents were alarmed.

Panayiotou said he informed the foreign ministry, the National Guard and Unficyp about the incident.

He said he had information that a similar incident had taken place on Wednesday near Geri, also in Nicosia district.
