Fire breaks out at Geri recycling plant

A fire is currently burning on Friday morning at a recycling plant in the Geri industrial area.

Spokesman for the fire service Andreas Kettis told the state broadcaster that the fire, which broke out at 5.40am, was burning a large mound of materials and four fire engines have been sent to the scene.

Reinforcements are expected from Larnaca as well as other areas of Nicosia, the spokesman said.

The firefighting efforts are focused on preventing the spread of the fire to other mounds.

The fire service spokesman was unable to momentarily confirm or deny reports that the fire broke out at the same plant which suffered a huge blaze recently in July.

Commuters have reported seeing large plumes of smoke from the Nicosia-Limassol highway.
