Festival brings tunes to old Nicosia streets

Nicosia joins more than 1,000 cities around the world this June in a celebration of music. On June 21, the old historical centre of the capital will fill with local bands, musicians, ensembles and choirs that will come together to mark World Music Day. The free music events and performances are part of the Make Music Cyprus Festival which takes place for the 5th consecutive year. On the longest day of the year, old Nicosia will host more than 55 musical acts!

“This different musical institution,” say festival organisers, “gives a pulse to the heart of Nicosia and celebrates International Music Day on June 21 every year. With a focus on community and freedom of expression, Make Music Cyprus unites in a rare opportunity more than 350 participants this year, professional and amateur musicians, students and music lovers, regardless of level, age, gender, musical genre and nationality, unlike a traditional music festival.”

From 5pm until midnight, 17 locations around the old town will transform into mini stages to welcome local musicians, children’s choirs and music educators. Visitors can walk the streets and enjoy different types of music genres and participate in interactive music activities. This year’s locations will span from Minoos Street, Nicosia Municipality, Faneromeni Square, Onasagorou Street, Faneromeni Street, Ledra Arcade, the Ledra – Arsinois Junction, Ledra – Onasagorou Junction, Eleftheria Square Bridge, Solomou Square to Eleftheria Square Moat, Theodotou Street and Makariou Avenue 360 Square. An evening full of music awaits, with more than 350 participants joining the celebrations!
