Explosion at unlicensed Larnaca scrap yard injures three, military ordnance suspected

Three people sustained serious injuries in an explosion at a metal collection facility in Aradippou on Friday morning, with authorities investigating whether military ordnance caused the blast at an unlicensed operation.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:45am when a 52-year-old Greek Cypriot man delivered scrap metal to the facility. An explosion during the unloading process injured the delivery person, an employee of African origin, and a Bulgarian citizen also delivering materials.

All three victims were transported to Larnaca General Hospital in serious condition and are undergoing medical examinations. Police have cordoned off the scene whilst multiple agencies investigate the cause.

Facility operated without proper licences, sources say

The metal collection facility lacked appropriate operating licences, according to sources. The operation previously received a €600 court fine but continued functioning despite legal action.

Police bomb disposal experts, fire service personnel, and labour inspection department officials are at the scene. National Guard bomb disposal specialists are expected to arrive for additional investigation.

The Department of Environment confirmed the facility operated illegally and had pursued legal action against the operation since 2019.

Environmental authorities sent a detailed report to the Attorney General in 2019 requesting a temporary ex parte order to halt operations after unsuccessful out-of-court settlements and compliance letters failed to stop the unlicensed installation.

In 2022, when the Attorney General requested an update, the Environment Department reiterated its position that the facility should be closed. A judge issued a final decision in 2023 imposing a €600 fine on the violator, though operations continued.

Authorities examine whether the explosion resulted from military ordnance amongst delivered scrap metal. The National Guard has been notified as part of the investigation into potential explosive materials from firing ranges.

Police and army bomb disposal units investigate scene

Initial police reports indicate the blast occurred during routine metal collection procedures. The explosion injured both delivery personnel and facility staff during normal operational activities.

Emergency services responded immediately, with ambulances dispatching to transport the injured parties for medical treatment at Larnaca General Hospital’s emergency department.
