European University organises conference with Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

In the context of its long-standing collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), European University Cyprus is organizing a special conference on Monday 25 September 2023, from 11:00-12:45, in the Omega room.

The keynote speaker of the conference will be the President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, professor Dr. GAO Xiang, who also holds the title of EUC honorary doctorate since 2020. President GAO – who has the status of a Minister – will be accompanied on the mission by members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as well as two General Directors.

In the context of this conference, the President and the delegation of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences will meet with the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture of the House of Representatives.

In addition, during the conference, a special agreement will be announced and signed between European University Cyprus and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for the establishment of a “Center for Chinese Studies”.

The specific Center – which will be chaired by Professor Kostas Gouliamos and sub-chaired by Associate Professor Pieris Chourides, and two respective members of the Chinese Academy – will have an interdisciplinary nature. Its aim is to promote events and develop studies and publications concerning the relations between China, Cyprus, Mediterranean countries and Europe, through the academic fields of the social sciences and humanities.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences – along with distinguished universities around the world – has created a multitude of such research centres. Cyprus will be the fourth in the European continent, following those set up in England, Greece and Portugal.
