European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and the heads of the body’s political groups are expected to arrive in Cyprus on Monday for a two-day visit ahead of the country’s EU Council presidency in 2026.
The visit, taking place on 1 and 2 December 2025, is part of preparations for Cyprus’s EU Council presidency in 2026. The programme includes consultations with the president and cabinet, as well as meetings at the House of Representatives.
According to an announcement on Saturday by the Cyprus EU Presidency Secretariat, meetings at the Presidential Palace will begin at 5:15pm on 1 December. President Nikos Christodoulidis will hold a private meeting with Metsola, which will begin with opening statements.
This will be followed by an expanded meeting and plenary session between the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament and Cyprus’s cabinet, in the presence of the president and Metsola. After a family photograph, Christodoulidis and Metsola will hold a joint press conference. An official dinner will take place at Kasteliotissa at 8pm.
On 2 December, meetings will take place at the House of Representatives. At 8:40am, House President Annita Dimitriou will hold a private meeting with Metsola, followed by an expanded meeting. At 9am, the House president and Metsola will meet with parliamentary party leaders and representatives.
At 10:35am, Metsola will take part with President Christodoulidis in a dialogue with students. The dialogue will take place at the Larnaca Technical Vocational Education and Training School as part of the “Christmas in Europe 2025” event, co-organised with the European Parliament Office in Cyprus.
The European Parliament delegation will depart Cyprus at midday.
On 1 January 2026, Cyprus assumes the EU Council presidency, taking a central role in shaping the Union’s direction.
“Cyprus will take the helm of the EU at a time of rapid developments and increasing expectations from our citizens. From reducing red tape for businesses to enlargement and finding solutions to migration challenges, Europe is on high alert, and Cyprus will lead this dynamic. I look forward to working with President Christodoulidis and the Cypriot presidency. This visit demonstrates that,” Metsola said ahead of the visit.
