The Energy Ministry reports significant progress in restoring electricity to fire-affected areas, with Energy Minister George Papanastasiou estimating that 80% of communities will have power by the weekend, either through the grid or using generators.
Following Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting, the minister said electricity has already been restored to communities including Agios Georgios Sylikou, Alassa, Lofou, Mallia and Ypsonas.
Work continues in other areas with the assistance of more than 150 Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) workers operating in difficult terrain under high temperatures. Papanastasiou called the technicians “heroes” and publicly thanked them for their dedication.
He noted that the ministry secured necessary equipment for grid restoration, with all required materials already in EAC warehouses, eliminating the need to import cables or transformers.
For complete restoration without generators, he estimated approximately one month will be required, as several cases involve medium-voltage infrastructure dating from the 1970s located in areas with difficult access.
