Drivers accelerated their vehicles and deliberately rammed barriers at Mackenzie car park in Larnaca to avoid paying new municipal parking fees, causing malicious damage to the smart parking system.
Cameras recorded two separate incidents involving a double-cab and a saloon car hitting control points of the smart parking system, which was put into operation in early December, according to philenews information.
Larnaca Municipality is expected to file a complaint with the police.
The municipality issued an announcement stating that such incidents have been recorded at the Mackenzie municipal car park, causing damage to municipal property and malfunction of systems serving residents and city visitors daily.
“Larnaca Municipality unequivocally condemns these actions and informs that it will file an official complaint with the police for every similar incident,” the announcement stated.
“It is noted that these parking areas are monitored and supervised through closed-circuit surveillance systems, and every illegal action is recorded”.
The municipality reminded drivers that entry of vehicles over five metres in length is prohibited in these car parks, as non-compliance with the regulation may cause damage to facilities and their operating systems.

The municipality called on the public to show respect for municipal property, which was created to improve the quality of life and better serve citizens, and to cooperate with authorities to maintain security and the smooth operation of municipal infrastructure.
“Larnaca Municipality will continue to take all necessary measures to protect parking areas and ensure their smooth operation,” the announcement stated.
