Police have issued a clarification confirming that drivers are permitted to run red lights or cross solid white lines at controlled junctions to yield to emergency vehicles, stressing that any delay can place human lives in serious danger.
The announcement addresses a concern that some drivers are hesitant to give way to ambulances when stopped at traffic light junctions monitored by the speed and red light camera system.
Fine cancellation procedure
Police clarified that when an ambulance, fire engine, or police patrol car approaches a junction with its lights and siren activated, drivers of vehicles directly ahead are permitted to move forward to clear the path. Crucially, out-of-court complaints (fines) are not issued in such cases.
Clear instructions have been given to the contracted company that manages the camera system to review all related recordings and not transmit fines when the violation was made solely to facilitate an emergency vehicle.
Should a citizen receive a fine despite yielding to an ambulance, they are advised to contact the contracting company immediately on 80008009 between 08:00 and 17:00 on any working day. The fine will be cancelled immediately after a corresponding check by the Police Traffic Department Headquarters.
Police called on all motorists to show responsibility and understanding by immediately yielding to all emergency vehicles, stressing that every second is critical in saving a human life.
