The 22-year-old driver of a pickup truck that rolled over, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Aliki Nicolaou from Lympia in the early hours of Saturday, will appear before the Larnaca District Court at 10:30 for a detention order. The young man, who tested positive in a preliminary alcohol check, is suspected of causing death by careless driving.
The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday (29/11) in the Kalo Chorio (Kakoratzias) area. Specifically, around 2:30 a.m., the vehicle—carrying the 17-year-old, a 22-year-old driver, and three other passengers (two 17-year-olds and a 22-year-old)—left the road at the entrance to the motorway heading towards Nicosia. Under circumstances still being investigated, the vehicle crashed into a safety rail and overturned.
Police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene. Firefighters intervened to free 17-year-old Aliki, who was in the back seat, from the vehicle. An ambulance crew transported her to Larnaca General Hospital, where the 17-year-old tragically died. The remaining passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital, where they received first aid and were released.
During the police examinations, the 22-year-old driver was subjected to an alcohol impairment test, which yielded a positive preliminary result. However, during the final test, the 22-year-old failed to provide a satisfactory breath sample, resulting in his arrest by police for a flagrant offence. He also underwent a drug impairment test, which produced a negative result.
