Data Protection Commissioner calls for suspension of Fidias Panayiotou’s ‘Agora’ app

The Data Protection Commissioner has sent an official letter to the legal representatives of MEP Fidias Panayiotou, requesting the immediate—albeit temporary—suspension of the digital platform “Agora.”

The request aims to allow for the completion of a formal evaluation process to ensure the application’s full compliance with European and national legal frameworks regarding the protection of personal data.

According to the Data Protection Commissioner, Maria Christofidou, the intervention falls within the authority’s mandate under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and relevant Cypriot legislation. The letter specifically calls for the platform to cease operations until the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) has been fully evaluated and a positive opinion has been issued.

Christofidou emphasized that adherence to the data protection framework is a legal obligation rather than an optional choice. The Authority is currently awaiting written confirmation regarding the temporary suspension of the app and has indicated it will proceed with further measures if deemed necessary within the scope of its powers.
