Cyprus woke up to a freezing morning on Tuesday as a cold air mass gripped the region, pushing temperatures to minus eight degrees Celsius at Chionistra, Troodos. The cold spell has seen inland temperatures drop to just one degree.
Andreas Chrysanthou, a representative of the Department of Meteorology, told Sigma TV that while Tuesday will remain mostly sunny, the “chilly scene” will persist with temperatures three to four degrees below seasonal averages. Daytime highs are expected to reach 12 degrees inland and 14 along the coast, though frost will remain a fixture in the higher mountains where the mercury will struggle to rise above zero.
The freeze in Cyprus is expected to retreat on Tuesday night, making way for a noticeably warmer but dustier Wednesday. However, this relief will be temporary. A low-pressure system currently over the central Mediterranean is forecast to reach the island on Thursday, bringing local rain and thunderstorms.
While the weather may settle briefly on Friday, a new disturbance on Saturday is expected to bring a fresh round of storms and the possibility of further snowfall in the mountains.
