Cyprus to prioritise Ukraine during EU presidency, Christodoulides tells Zelenskyy

President Nikos Christodoulides pledged that Ukraine would be a central priority of Cyprus’s EU presidency following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday.

Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha are in Cyprus to meet EU leaders ahead of the island assuming the rotating presidency of the European Union, with the launch ceremony scheduled for Wednesday evening.

“Fruitful meeting with President Zelenskyy, weeks after my visit to Kyiv,” Christodoulides said in a statement on X. “Cyprus reaffirms its steadfast commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The Cypriot president said his country understood what was at stake for Ukraine, drawing on Cyprus’s own experience of illegal invasion and ongoing military occupation.

“We stand firmly with you as you work for a just and lasting peace, firmly rooted on the UN Charter and fully respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.

Christodoulides said Cyprus would work to ensure sustained support for Ukraine at all levels during its presidency.
