Cyprus records 182 drug overdose deaths since 2004

Cyprus has recorded 182 deaths from drug overdoses between 2004 and 2023, with 17 fatalities documented in 2023 alone, predominantly linked to stimulant substances including cocaine and methamphetamine, according to official data released ahead of International Overdose Awareness Day.

The Cyprus Drug Control Authority (AAEK) published the figures from its Monitoring Department/National Documentation and Information Centre on Drugs, revealing the scope of fatal overdoses across nearly two decades.

The 2023 deaths occurred primarily from stimulant drug use rather than traditional opioids, reflecting changing patterns in Cyprus’s drug consumption landscape. The authority released the data to mark International Overdose Awareness Day on 31st August, which carries the theme “Unite to Save Lives.”

EU overdose crisis

European Union data indicates at least 6,500 overdose deaths occurred across the bloc in 2023, according to the EU Drugs Agency (EUDA). The majority of fatalities involved simultaneous use of multiple substances including opioids, stimulants, alcohol and benzodiazepines.

The polydrug consumption pattern mirrors global trends showing increased complexity in substance abuse cases, with users combining different drug categories that create heightened overdose risks.

Prevention strategy launched

Authorities are implementing integrated strategies targeting overdose prevention through four initiatives.

Substitution therapy programmes are being strengthened to improve access and retention for opioid users. The authority ensures treatment continuity during incarceration and community reintegration periods.

Naloxone availability has expanded across Cyprus through nasal spray distribution. AAEK trains healthcare professionals who subsequently educate users and family members on proper naloxone administration techniques.

Harm reduction services include mobile unit “CareZone” expansion and automatic dispensing machines providing sterile syringes across all Cyprus districts. The programme aims to reduce infection risks amongst drug users.

Public awareness campaign targets stigma

Anti-stigma campaigns seek to reduce public prejudice whilst strengthening support systems for individuals facing addiction challenges. The initiatives promote evidence-based approaches to drug dependency treatment.

Eleftheria Square will be illuminated in purple on 31st August to mark International Overdose Awareness Day. CareZone mobile unit staff and AAEK officials will provide public information, distribute educational materials and discuss overdose prevention strategies at the square.
