Cyprus positions itself as gateway for Bahraini energy firms seeking to access EU market

Cyprus is targeting energy cooperation and Gulf investment through closer ties with Bahrain, citing expertise from Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries that could help the island address challenges in its energy sector.

Beyond technical cooperation, Cyprus seeks to attract investors for energy and other projects. The government is pursuing similar objectives with India, where the President announced yesterday he will travel in May for talks on energy and broader economic issues. The upcoming EU-India agreement adds weight to that visit.

Chambers commit to deeper cooperation

Cypriot and Bahraini business leaders signed an MoU yesterday in Manama committing to deeper cooperation, with a Bahrain Chamber delegation set to visit Cyprus in 2026.

The Bahrain-Cyprus Business Forum, co-organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Bahrain’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, positioned Cyprus as a competitive gateway for Bahraini firms seeking EU market access.

CCCI President Stavros Stavrou said partnerships between Cypriot and Bahraini companies could help firms compete in third markets. He urged Cypriot businesses to view ties with Bahraini firms as long-term strategic partnerships rather than opportunistic relationships.

The right time to collaborate is now, according to Bahrain Chamber President Sameer Abdulla Nass, who highlighted technology, industry, agriculture, shipping and investments as key sectors. Bahrain offers Cypriot firms a gateway to Gulf markets, he said.

Bahrain’s Trade and Industry Minister Abdulla Adel Fakhro noted both island nations share similar-sized economies built on services, tourism and technology, with strategic geographical positions.
