Cyprus opens EU presidency with ceremony in Nicosia (photos)

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed European and regional leaders to Nicosia on Wednesday for the official opening ceremony of the country’s rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The ceremony began at 6:30 p.m. at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation building in the capital, with officials and guests arriving throughout the evening.

Christodoulides and Filippa Karsera received heads of state, government and European institutions at the venue.

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and his wife Laila Salah Eldin were the first to arrive, followed by Lebanese President Joseph Khalil Aoun and his wife Nehmat Aoun, and Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid with his wife Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed.

The Cypriot president also received Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi, Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa were the final arrivals.
