Cyprus negotiators to meet Wednesday ahead of leaders’ talks with UN envoy

Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Turkish Cypriot leader’s representative Mehmet Dana will meet on Wednesday to prepare for the leaders’ meeting on 11 December.

The two negotiators will hold talks on Wednesday morning ahead of Thursday’s joint meeting between the two leaders and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, according to reports.

Holguín has been on the island since last Thursday evening and has already held separate meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.

Earlier on Thursday, the two leaders will visit the Committee on Missing Persons.

EU envoy for Cyprus Johannes Hahn will also be in Cyprus on the same day, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Saturday. Letymbiotis called this a “fortunate coincidence” given the importance of the European dimension in the Cyprus issue.

Letymbiotis expressed hope that the 11 December joint meeting will mark the decisive first step towards resuming negotiations on the Cyprus issue.

The President has convened a National Council meeting for Friday to brief the political leadership on the results of the contacts.
