The Cyprus Fire Service had a busy transition into 2026, responding to 34 incidents in the last 24 hours, including 11 fires and 23 special service calls. Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis reported that several blazes appear to have been started intentionally.
Fires in Famagusta District
Deryneia: At 00:55, a fire engine from the Famagusta station responded to a fire in the centre of the community square. Two motorcycles of unknown ownership were destroyed.
Paralimni: Shortly after, at 01:17, a large 1,100-litre waste bin was set on fire in the town’s main square.
Cause: Both incidents were attended by police and fire crews. Initial assessments suggest the fires were intentionally set by groups of youths.
Vehicle Fire in Strovolos
Location: At 02:14, Nicosia fire stations were alerted to a fire involving a private vehicle parked outside the owner’s home in Strovolos.
Response: The fire was largely extinguished by the owner using a handheld fire extinguisher before crews arrived. Firefighters performed a final wash-down, inspected the vehicle, and ventilated the area.
Investigation: Two fire engines were deployed to the scene. An official investigation into the cause of this fire is ongoing.
