Cyprus creates autonomous defence industry body

Cyprus has formalised its defence and space industry cluster as an autonomous body with partnerships spanning eight countries, positioning itself for greater integration in European defence markets ahead of its 2026 EU Presidency.

The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with the Cyprus Research and Innovation Enterprises Association, announced the creation of the Cyprus Defence, Security and Space Industry Cluster (CyDSIC) to serve the developing ecosystem of Cypriot companies in defence, security and space sectors.

The cluster has operated informally since 2019 under the research association’s umbrella, contributing to the development of Cyprus’s defence and space industry and enhancing Cypriot participation in European and international research programmes. The shift to autonomous status aims to strengthen the industry’s institutional role at both national and European level.

The cluster has built an international cooperation network with Greece, France, Poland, Italy, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Hungary and recently India, signing cooperation memoranda with foreign counterparts. It participates in the EU’s European defence regions network and has promoted the successful integration of Cypriot companies in European Defence Fund and European Defence Agency programmes.

Since 2021, the cluster has organised national pavilions at the international exhibitions DEFEA and Eurosatory and established the “BATTLEFIELD ReDEFiNED” conference as Cyprus’s leading defence and technology event. It will host the international conference “BATTLEFIELD ReDEFiNED 2026” with the European Commission’s Defence Industry and Space directorate under the Cyprus EU Presidency and Defence Ministry.

The cluster has actively supported Cyprus’s participation in the European Space Agency, hosting ESA specialists to document national space capability, and promoted Cyprus’s involvement in the European Defence Industrial Development Programme.

The autonomous structure aims to strengthen the Cypriot defence and space industry, better respond to technological and geopolitical developments, promote dual-use products, increase exports of advanced Cypriot technologies and strengthen cooperation with European defence and space agencies.

The cluster will continue working with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, relevant ministries and the research association. It has extended an open invitation to all businesses and entities in the defence, security and space sectors to join the new structure.

The chamber said more information and the date of the first statutory meeting will be announced within January 2026.
