Cyprus consumers further stung in August as foodstuff prices continue rising

Consumers’ wallets in August were further burdened due to the continued rise in prices in almost all basic foodstuff, according to Thursday’s data released by the Cyprus Statistical Office.

And following equally alarming figures released earlier this week by Eurostat it seems that prices on supermarket shelves will keep rising, Philenews reports.

Official data shows that fresh vegetables and sugar are now almost luxury goods in Cyprus, as these are the two categories recording the highest price increases this August compared to August 2022.

-The category of fresh vegetables, excluding potatoes, rose by 37.4% compared to August 2022 when they had recorded a 35.2% decrease. However, August 2021 recorded a 54% increase.

-Vegetable prices rose by 23.1% in August 2023, compared to a decline of 18.7% last year, after a 39.5% increase in 2021.

-Fresh fruit prices rose by 13.1% this August, compared to a 27.8% decline last year and a 34.5% rise in 2021.

-The price of sugar (among the products with the highest price increases over the last three years) rose by 28.3% in August, compared to 43.2% last year and 2.3% in 2021.
