Cyprus airports open despite wave of cancellations

Cyprus’s two international airports are operating normally despite a surge in flight cancellations triggered by the regional conflict, airport operator Hermes Airports said on Wednesday.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Hermes said Larnaca and Paphos airports were functioning as usual and serving all passengers wishing to travel on available flights, in full cooperation with state authorities and the wider airport community.

As of the statement’s publication, 48 flights had been cancelled at Larnaca and 18 at Paphos on Wednesday. Despite the cancellations, 65 flights were still expected to operate at Larnaca and 38 at Paphos.

Hermes attributed the disruption to developments in the region in recent days, which had prompted airlines worldwide to cancel flights to Middle East destinations, with some European carriers also pulling services to Cyprus.

Direct connections remained available from Larnaca to the United Kingdom, Greece, Poland, Austria, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Egypt, Hungary, Italy, France, Belgium, Armenia, Spain, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Latvia, Moldova, Lithuania, and Lebanon. Carriers operating those routes included Wizz Air, British Airways, Aegean, Sky Express, Cyprus Airways, LOT, Air Serbia, EgyptAir, Georgian Airlines, Air Baltic, Fly One, and Middle East Airlines.

From Paphos, direct services were available to the United Kingdom, Greece, Poland, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Romania, Latvia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Croatia, and Italy, operated by Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and British Airways.

Hermes cautioned that the situation remained fluid and that airlines were adjusting their schedules in line with developments. Based on current planning, however, airlines had additional scheduled flights to and from Cypriot airports lined up for the second half of March.

Passengers were advised to check airline websites or contact their travel agent for up-to-date information and bookings.
