Cypriots spend 100 hours a year in traffic, transport expert says

Transport expert Loukas Demetriou has highlighted findings from a new traffic study, telling Sigma TV that Cypriots lose a significant amount of time driving on the roads.

The research, conducted by TomTom, showed that citizens in Cyprus spend 100 hours every year inside their cars due to congestion. The study exclusively covers transport by car, not by other means of transport. Demetriou added that 95% of journeys in Cyprus are made using a private vehicle.

Another statistic that Demetriou highlighted was that crossing a distance of 10 kilometres in Cyprus takes an average of 26 minutes.

Drawing a comparison with London, he noted that citizens there use public transport at a rate of 57%, while the corresponding rate in Cyprus is only 5%.

Regarding his view on solving traffic congestion, Demetriou said it would happen only when people stopped using their cars and utilised other means.

However, he acknowledged the objective difficulties, stating that the country does not have sufficient means for mass public transport.
