The Cyber Crime Unit is investigating a video leaked online yesterday that triggered political upheaval, but the probe faces obstacles because the X platform refuses to reveal user information, philenews has learnt.
The Law Office immediately instructed police to launch investigations into all aspects of the case, including the video’s origin, after being informed at the highest level, according to philenews sources.
The Cyber Crime Unit is handling the examination due to the nature of the case, with other government services also involved.
The Law Office said it would not comment at the present stage. The case remains at an early investigation phase, philenews understands.
Tracing the video’s source is difficult because it was posted on X, which has a policy of not providing information about its users, unlike other platforms.
In past cases involving public interest issues where political figures or institutions turned to X, the platform refused to reveal who was behind anonymous, fake or parody accounts.
However, an expert told philenews that available tools and technological advances now make it possible to conclude who might be behind an account.
A pattern of analysis and examination can lead to directions for establishing who leaked the video, the expert said.
