Customs officers at the Agios Dometios crossing point arrested a Romanian national on 7 February 2026 after discovering contraband during routine checks on vehicles travelling from the occupied areas to the government-controlled areas.
A search of the driver’s vehicle revealed 27 cartons of cigarettes—totalling 5,400 cigarettes—lacking the mandatory Greek and Turkish health warnings, indicating they were untaxed. Officers also seized 25 litres of kefir, violating Green Line regulations that strictly prohibit the transport of animal products.

Authorities arrested the individual for offences committed in their presence and confiscated both the goods and the vehicle. The suspect was later released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement, paying a €1,700 fine plus a €300 fee for the release of the car.
