Critical tax reform meeting underway as parties push for higher thresholds

A meeting is underway at the Finance Ministry on Cyprus’s tax reform, with MPs from the parliamentary Finance Committee pushing for higher tax-free thresholds and deductions than those proposed in government bills.

MPs from DISY, DIKO and DEPA are attending the meeting at the ministry.

According to sources at Phileleftheros, the final touches are being put on the reform, with the government’s positions on changes requested by the parties expected to be locked down today.

The parties are seeking an increase to the tax-free threshold from the €20,500 proposed in the bills, as well as increases to tax deductions for children and students from the €1,000 provided. They also want higher annual income ceilings for eligibility for the additional changes.

After the meeting, Finance Minister Makis Keravnos will make statements on the final provisions of the bills.
