Former Cyprus Volunteerism Commissioner Yiannakis Yiannaki could be released from prison by late 2026 and will face no personal financial consequences for the salary obtained through fraudulent documents.
The 61-year-old former official was sentenced to three years imprisonment for using forged academic credentials during his employment at the Cyprus Youth Board.
Early release possible after serving half of three-year sentence
Under Cyprus law, Yiannaki will be eligible to apply for conditional release after serving half of his sentence, with each year served calculated as nine months in practice.
This means he could submit an application to the Parole Board for conditional release by the end of next year, having served approximately 27 months of his sentence.
The former commissioner will be eligible to apply for parole in late 2026 under the standard early release provisions.
No charges filed for salary obtained through fraudulent documents
The Law Office did not include charges relating to the salary Yiannaki received from the Cyprus Youth Board based on his fraudulent appointment using forged official documents.
Consequently, Judge Nicole Gregoriou was not required to rule on any economic crime related to his employment compensation obtained through false credentials.
No proceedings have been initiated to recover any portion of the salary he received from the Cyprus Youth Board during his employment there.
It remains doubtful whether any disciplinary proceedings against Yiannaki can be completed before he reaches the retirement age of 63.
