A total of 458 irregular migrants on six boats, were spotted off the coast of Cape Greco, and taken to the Pournara reception centre on Monday
According to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), the six boats were first detected by the coast guard radars at noon.
The migrants were initially escorted to safety at the Ayia Napa marina where their details were registered.
The boats carried a total of 30, 24, 62, 37 and 162 people, of whom 258 men, 44 women, 123 children and 33 unaccompanied minors.
According to the police the six boats set off from Lebanon and the passengers paid $3,000 each for the journey, to an unknown individual.
Based on the migrants’ testimonies two people, a 31-year-old man from Lebanon and a 23-year-old man from Syria, who were on the sixth boat, were arrested by the police.
The two are expected to be brought before the Famagusta district court on Tuesday for the issuance of a detention order.
