Civil Defence authorities have issued emergency safety instructions to the public as heavy rain and thunderstorms prepare to lash the island this Sunday. The Meteorological Department earlier activated a yellow weather warning, effective from 11:00 am until 8:00 pm, specifically targeting isolated storms expected to strike the west, north, and south coasts before spreading inland.
Flood-proof your home now
Authorities urge residents to take immediate self-protection measures. Clear all storm drains outside your home or workplace and ensure gutters are functioning properly.
If you live in a flood-prone area or own a basement:
–Dig a sump pit and install an automatic water pump.
–Move expensive equipment and valuables to higher ground.
–Keep soil patches in your garden clear of paving to allow water absorption.
–Secure loose items like water tanks and heaters.
–Seal cracks in boundary walls and prepare sandbags to block incoming water.
Survival during the storm
Stay indoors and avoid basement areas entirely. If you are caught outside:
Never cross a flooded road on foot or in any vehicle.
Turn around immediately if you encounter deep water.
Abandon your car if it stalls, as it could be swept away or submerged.
Steer clear of power lines and areas prone to landslides.
After the water recedes
Stay away from flooded zones even after the rain stops. Floods reshape the landscape, hide broken road surfaces, and create dangerous slopes. Assume all standing water is contaminated by debris or dead animals.
Tornado and high wind safety
If a tornado approaches, close all doors and windows but keep internal glass shutters open to equalise air pressure. Move away from glass and loose furniture.
In the open: Track the tornado’s path and run in the opposite direction.
If trapped: Lie face down in a ditch and cover your head with your hands to avoid flying debris or uprooted trees.
For high winds, secure garden furniture, pots, and signs. Avoid coastal activities, do not walk under balconies or large trees, and stop any outdoor work that could spark a fire. Employers must suspend outdoor site work to protect staff.
