Brutal attack against Israeli in Limassol not antisemitic, Cyprus Police say

Cyprus Police have dismissed reports circulating in Israeli media alleging that a young Israeli man was brutally assaulted at a Limassol hotel specifically because he was heard speaking Hebrew.

The reports, which gained traction on social media following a post by the young man’s father, suggested that the attack took place at the entrance of a hotel in the coastal city. According to these claims, the victim was forced to return to Israel for emergency eye surgery and remains at risk of losing his sight. However, authorities in the Republic have clarified that the narrative presented in these publications “does not correspond to the facts.”

Official police sources informed the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the incident was actually a physical altercation between Israeli nationals during an event held at the hotel. Investigators from the Episkopi Police Station, who are handling the case, noted that the individual at the centre of the reports has since provided a written statement to the police confirming that he has no complaint regarding the matter.

“The claims being written are unfounded,” a police source stated, emphasizing that the clash was internal to the group of visitors. The clarification comes amid heightened sensitivity regarding the safety of tourists in the region.

Authorities have urged caution regarding unverified reports appearing on social media platforms, noting that the investigation remains open primarily to document the full sequence of the disturbance.
