British Bases extend mandatory evacuation for UK families in Akrotiri until Friday

The British Bases authorities have decided to extend the mandatory evacuation for British families living in Akrotiri until Friday as part of security measures in force due to the US-led war against Iran.

The British Bases told Phileleftheros they are covering accommodation costs for a total of 286 people, including families and vulnerable groups of Akrotiri residents who are staying in hotels, as part of measures taken to support the local community.

Schools in Akrotiri will remain closed until Monday. At the same time, instructions are expected from the Interior Ministry regarding a possible extension of the mandatory evacuation for the community.

The British Bases authorities continue to closely monitor the situation and evaluate the data to ensure the safety of residents and personnel.

The decision comes as the UK Ministry of Defence evacuated military families from RAF Akrotiri to alternative accommodation in Cyprus following the Iranian drone strikes early on Monday.

President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed that a Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle struck military facilities at the British Bases at Akrotiri at 12.03am, causing minor material damage.

The Cyprus Interior Ministry activated Civil Defence forces and opened emergency shelters in Limassol, with the Akrotiri municipal district remaining under evacuation until Friday noon when the situation will be reassessed.
