British bases align with Cyprus foot-and-mouth measures as vaccination begins near Akrotiri

The Sovereign Base Areas Administration has confirmed it is fully aligned with measures introduced by the Republic of Cyprus to contain the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the Larnaca District, with no positive cases recorded within the bases.

SBA representatives are attending daily coordination meetings at Larnaca’s Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre and have introduced precautionary measures including enhanced patrols, additional checks, and new disinfection points, in close coordination with the Republic of Cyprus Veterinary Services.

Dhekelia Area Administration Officer Maria Kyriakidou said the SBA Administration was fully committed to supporting the Republic of Cyprus’s containment effort.

“Our teams are working closely with the Veterinary Services and other authorities and we remain actively engaged through the daily coordination meetings at the JRCC to ensure that the necessary preventive measures are implemented,” she said.

“Protecting animal health and supporting our local farming communities is a shared responsibility and we remain vigilant in assisting the wider national effort to prevent the disease from spreading further,” she added.

The SBAA said suspected breaches were being reported to veterinary authorities, and that engagement with local communities, livestock operators, and other stakeholders was continuing to raise awareness of biosecurity requirements.

As part of the wider containment effort, the Republic of Cyprus Veterinary Services last week vaccinated the indigenous Cyprus Marsh cattle breed in the Akrotiri and Livadhi area within the Western SBAs.
