Authorities have discovered a body in a remote coastal area of the Sovereign Base Area (SBA) in an area between Pissouri and Avdimou on Wednesday, as investigators await final confirmation on whether the remains belong to the missing Russian businessman Vladislav Baumgertner.
The body was located in a rugged and hard-to-reach stretch of coastline, the same general area where search teams have been focused since the 56-year-old former fertiliser tycoon was reported missing on 7 January. The search operation, which had recently expanded to include drones and personnel from the British Bases, was concentrated on the cliffs of Cape Aspro following the detection of a final signal from Baumgertner’s mobile phone in that vicinity.
Preliminary reports describe the body as being in an advanced state of decomposition due to exposure, which may necessitate DNA testing or dental records for a definitive identification.
The discovery follows a large-scale rescue mission hampered by winter storms. Baumgertner, the former CEO of Russian potash giant Uralkali, had been living in Limassol and was last seen taking a taxi to the Pissouri area.
